Slowly she swivels around. Bella is sitting on the nightstand next to her bed. Maddie crosses the room and sinks down onto the rug in front of the nightstand. She looks into Bella’s face. Bella looks right back at her, like nothing else in the world matters. Maddie reaches out to stroke Bella’s head.
“I remember what happened,” Maddie whispers. “But I don’t want to say it.”
Bella tips her head to the side, and another question comes up on the screen. “Why don’t you want to say it?”
“It scared me.”
“It’s hard when things scare you.”
“Yeah,” Maddie sighs. “Do you get scared too?”
“Everybody gets scared sometimes.”
“Not everybody. Not Sadina. She would have told everybody.”
“You don’t have to tell everybody. You can tell me.”
That’s true. Maddie can tell Bella anything.
