“Bella, it’s me, Maddie,” she says. The sound of her voice is dry and dusty, like a book that’s been left on the shelf too long.
That’s okay. It’s her own fault, Maddie is sure of that. She hasn’t talked to Bella for such a long time, and now Bella doesn’t know what to say.
One more time. “Hi, Bella,” she says as softly as she can. “Talk to me.”
Maddie stares and waits and stares and waits, but the screen shines on, blue and blank and empty.
