Chapter 7: Sadina
That night I’m kept awake by the soft sound of voices.
They start in the room below mine. Not long after I switch off the light and curl into bed, the voices reach my room, filling it up like smoke. One voice is pitched low, the other higher, a humming and rolling duet. They should ease me into sleep. Instead my mind—my whole body—keeps straining to turn the sounds into words I can understand.
