When I tell Mom what happened at the mall, she closes her eyes and breathes in and out, three gulpy breaths, before she can answer.
Maddie is behind us in the back seat of the car, and Mom checks her out in the rear-view mirror. “Maddie, sweetie, are you—?”
“I’m okay!” Maddie cuts in. She’s bouncing on the seat. “Mom, you know what I saw? Dalmatian puppies. And we should get one. If you saw them, you’d say yes.”
